How Far Would You Go?
When I get comments back fom those who read “How To Land Your Dream Job“, I am always thrilled at the energy they have. What seems more valuable is how they are so creative in their search for that elusive career.
Sometimes, just a clear look at yourself and the possibilities is enough. The trigger of doing work around who you are and what you can do to move yourself along is enough to set you off.
With other people, they see this as an opportunity to redress the whole issue of where their life is going - and sometimes that requires drastic action. Even as extreme as leaving the country and finding a whole new lifestyle and culture.
Many, especially when unencumbered by mortgages; children and other family responsibilities, make the time when they are young, healthy (though usually not that wealthy!) energetic and enthusiastic enough, to make a dramatic change in their lives by working abroad.
The great news about this change of lifestyle is that it need not be permanent; it is not for as fixed a period as you might think and it can be flexible too - enabling a good sampling of several cultures and work experiences.
Typically, those who set out on such an experience are in their early 20s, perhaps have already sampled a ‘gap year’ (where little work and much partying seems to be the major occupation!) and want more, without the bigger challenge of making a permanent move.
They may have completed their education, perhaps have a couple of years experience in their chosen field under their belt and want the freedom and experience (often not just in the workplace!), that a warmer climate perhaps or a genuinely cherished lifestyle provides.
Of course, there are downsides. In a world where property ownership is taking an increasingly important position in the lives of those living in a ‘western’ economy, unless you get on that ladder, it might be increasingly difficult to scramble on, even in a couple of years time.
Perhaps the lengthening ties from school or college friends will wither further and, of course, any romantic partnerships could come under severe, if not fatal strain.
Still the upsides are fascinating. Young people owadays have such opportunity! They are able to try things on that even 10-15 years ago were unthinkable. With that comes a confidence that the young of today have which sometimes seems quite incredible.
That elusive ‘dream job’ might not be as elusive as many consider. Today the smorgasbord sampler of lifestyle are open to almost all. The young have the time, energy and opportunity. For those older it is a bigger challenge.
Yet, there is alays the possibility for them too.
